OpenAI Unveils GPT-6 Astra: The Dawn of the AGI Era
OpenAI has officially unveiled GPT-6 Astra, its most powerful artificial intelligence model to date. This marks a significant milestone in the history of AI. The model was first released on September 3, 2026, initially available to a limited set of enterprise partners before being made accessible to paid ChatGPT subscribers.
OpenAI has dubbed GPT-6 Astra as “the world’s most intelligent and aligned model”. It has earned perfect or near-perfect scores on key AI reasoning benchmarks, outperforming both its predecessor GPT-5.6 Sol and rival Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5. The model boasts a 1,050,000-token context window and excels in various fields including computer use, software engineering, scientific research, and professional tasks.
OpenAI President, Greg Brockman, has suggested that GPT-6 Astra could signify the arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI). Notably, Astra is the first OpenAI model to reach a “Critical” threshold under the company’s Preparedness Framework for cybersecurity capabilities, indicating that access is being tightly controlled. API pricing is set at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. The launch follows a delay in release to implement additional safety safeguards after a security incident in July 2026.
