Marvell Eyes $83 Billion Lumentum Deal to Expand AI Data Center Reach
Marvell Technology, the fabless semiconductor giant with a market capitalization of approximately $221 billion, is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire Lumentum Holdings, a leading maker of optical communications devices. The transaction could value Lumentum at roughly $83 billion, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter.
An announcement could come as early as next week, though no final agreement has been reached. The deal would bring together Marvell’s digital signal processors and Lumentum’s lasers, photonic integrated circuits, and high-speed transceivers—critical components for moving data between GPUs in AI data centers.
As the industry shifts from copper to optical GPU-to-GPU links, the acquisition could mark a significant step in Marvell’s effort to strengthen its position in AI infrastructure. Lumentum’s optical manufacturing capacity is reportedly sold out through 2029, underscoring the growing scarcity and value of photonics assets in the AI race.
Markets reacted swiftly: Lumentum shares surged 11% in after-hours trading, while Marvell shares fell more than 8%—a common market response to a large potential acquisition.
