Isar Aerospace: A European Rocket Startup’s Historic First Orbit

In a landmark moment for Europe’s commercial space industry, German rocket startup Isar Aerospace successfully reached orbit for the first time over the weekend. This achievement places the Munich-based company in an elite tier of launch providers capable of delivering payloads to space.

The company’s Spectrum rocket reached orbit on Saturday and successfully deployed its payloads in low Earth orbit (LEO). This significant achievement came on only its second test flight. Chief Commercial Officer Stella Guillen confirmed the milestone on Monday. She expressed that the space industry is “desperate” for additional launch capacity and that Isar already holds a pipeline worth more than 10 billion euros ($11.6 billion).

Isar Aerospace is backed by a high-profile roster of investors. This includes Porsche, venture capital firms Lakestar and HV Capital, and the NATO Innovation Fund. In June, Isar raised 270 million euros in a Series D round to fuel its production scale-up. The company’s ambitions extend far beyond single launches, with goals to launch hundreds of rockets as satellite demand booms.

Isar’s success is seen as a crucial step for Europe’s efforts to build a homegrown commercial launch industry and reduce dependence on U.S. providers like SpaceX.
