Investigation Launched into Tesla’s Autonomous Cybercab Fleet
Tesla’s audacious launch of its autonomous Cybercab robotaxi service in Austin, Texas was met with immediate regulatory challenges. On September 4, 2026, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated a formal federal investigation into the vehicle’s deployment mere hours after the first units were introduced to public streets.
The Cybercab, a two-seater autonomous vehicle, is uniquely designed without a steering wheel, brake pedals, gas pedal, or rearview mirrors. This innovative vehicle is part of Tesla’s fleet of approximately 1,000 units being introduced in Austin. Users can book rides using Tesla’s dedicated robotaxi app. However, current U.S. federal regulations mandate that vehicles — including autonomous ones — must have manual controls. The NHTSA’s audit query AQ26002 will thoroughly examine the technical and legal grounds on which Tesla self-certified the Cybercab’s compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
“NHTSA fully supports the safe development and deployment of automated vehicles. But as the federal regulator, we need to ensure that all of our laws are followed,” stated NHTSA administrator Jonathan Morrison.
Tesla has expressed plans to gradually expand Cybercab deployment to other cities. However, this probe — which is similar to a previous investigation into Amazon’s Zoox that took four years to resolve — could significantly delay those plans.
