Meyer Werft Introduces Groundbreaking Battery-Electric Cruise Ship Concept
German shipbuilder, Meyer Werft, has unveiled a pioneering concept for what could be the world’s first fully battery-electric cruise ship exceeding 80,000 gross tons. This marks a potential turning point in the cruise industry’s drive towards decarbonization.
The concept, aptly named “Vision“, was showcased at the Seatrade Cruise Global event in Miami this week. The proposed 275-meter vessel is designed to accommodate 1,856 passengers and promises a staggering reduction of up to 95% in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional cruise ships. The advanced battery system for this revolutionary vessel will be supplied by Norway-based Corvus Energy.
According to Thomas Weigend, Chief Sales Officer at Meyer Werft, “The technology is available today. If ordered this year, we could already deliver the first ship in 2031“. The battery system would enable the ship to navigate a large portion of typical European cruise routes, including Barcelona to Civitavecchia near Rome. By 2030, it is anticipated that approximately 100 European ports will have the necessary charging infrastructure to support such vessels.
The innovative design of the “Vision” eliminates the need for conventional exhaust systems and funnels, thereby freeing up valuable deck space and providing unobstructed views. The concept also boasts an all-weather design with enclosed spaces, including an indoor aqua park, and promises significantly reduced noise and vibration levels for an enhanced passenger experience.
