Europe Invests €387.8M in AMD-Powered LUMI-AI Supercomputer

Europe is making a significant stride towards bridging the AI computing gap with the United States and China. The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) has inked a €387.8 million ($449 million) agreement with French supercomputer manufacturer Bull. The contract is for the construction of LUMI-AI, a cutting-edge AI supercomputer. The supercomputer will be stationed at the CSC – IT Center for Science data center in Kajaani, Finland.

The upcoming machine will harness the power of AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs and 6th Generation AMD EPYC 256-core processors. This marks a significant victory for AMD in a market usually dominated by Nvidia. The system is projected to provide ten times the AI capacity and almost double the high-performance computing (HPC) capability of the existing LUMI supercomputer. The funding for this project is equally divided between EuroHPC JU and the LUMI AI Factory consortium. The consortium includes Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland.

This contract signifies the sixth AI Factory procurement contract signed by EuroHPC and the largest-ever contract for Bull. The deployment of the supercomputer is scheduled for the second half of 2027. EuroHPC officials have highlighted the urgency of this project. The current infrastructure is already turning down some research applications due to high demand. LUMI-AI is designed to cater to researchers, startups, and businesses across Europe who require access to top-tier AI training and inference infrastructure.
