Thailand Reduces Visa-Free Stay to 30 Days from September 15
Travelers planning a trip to Thailand need to be aware of a significant policy shift this month. As of September 15, 2026, Thailand will reduce its visa-free stay period from 60 days to 30 days. This change affects tourists from over 60 countries and territories, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, China, and all 27 EU member states.
The official Royal Gazette of Thailand published the Ministry of Interior announcements on August 31, thereby formally terminating the special 60-day visa exemption. This exemption had been applicable to 93 countries since mid-2024. The authorities have stated that this move is part of a larger initiative to combat crime involving foreign nationals. This comes in the wake of a series of arrests of foreigners accused of drug offenses, sex trafficking, and running businesses without the necessary permits.
The number of nationalities eligible for any visa-free entry has also been reduced from 93 countries to just 60. Furthermore, land-border entries under the 30-day exemption will generally be restricted to twice per calendar year. However, this does not apply to nationals of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Travelers who were admitted before September 15 will retain their initially granted period of stay.
Experts strongly advise all travelers planning trips to Thailand to confirm their specific status with a Thai embassy or through Thailand’s e-Visa system well before departure.
