U.S. Department of Defense Boosts AI Capabilities with ChatGPT and Grok Deployment on Secure Portal
The U.S. Department of Defense has significantly expanded its artificial intelligence capabilities, adding OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil and Starshield AI’s Grok for Government to its secure GenAI.mil portal. This move marks the first time multiple frontier AI models have been made available to all 3 million DoD personnel.
Originally launched with only Google Gemini for Government, GenAI.mil has evolved into a multi-model platform that has already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users. All three models — ChatGPT Mil, Grok for Government, and Gemini — have cleared Impact Level 5 (IL5), the highest authorization for environments storing sensitive unclassified data. This ensures that military information is handled securely and is exempt from standard consumer data collection.
ChatGPT Mil is designed for document-heavy work including planning, policy, logistics, and administration. Grok, on the other hand, is integrated into the Starshield AI secure satellite communications network. A Pentagon official stated that the expansion aims to eliminate vendor lock-in and foster a more diverse American AI ecosystem. Notably absent from the portal is Anthropic’s Claude, after the Pentagon moved to ban the company’s products earlier this year following a policy dispute over autonomous weapons use.
