New International Food Pyramid Puts Plants Ahead of Meat
A coalition of 22 international nutrition experts has introduced a new food pyramid that challenges established—and controversial—dietary guidelines. Its framework puts plant-based foods, whole grains, and healthy fats at the center of global healthy eating.
Published and covered by Healthline on November 5, 2026, the International Food Guide Pyramid was developed by nutrition scientists from around the world, led by Karen Della Corte of Brigham Young University.
Unlike recent U.S. dietary guidelines that prioritize animal proteins, the new pyramid gives prominence to plant-based proteins, including beans, lentils, and nuts. It also favors unsaturated plant oils, such as olive and canola oil, over animal fats.
The pyramid’s key recommendations include:
- Prioritize plant-based proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats.
- Keep sugar intake below 10% of total daily calories.
- Choose water instead of sugary drinks.
- Adapt the recommendations to include local, affordable, and culturally relevant foods.
“Despite what people often hear, there’s actually substantial agreement in nutrition science about the foundations of healthy eating,” said Della Corte.
The framework also emphasizes dietary sustainability and the connections between food choices, human health, and the health of the planet.
