OpenAI Ventures into Humanoid Robotics with a Projected 2027 Demonstration

OpenAI, renowned for its ChatGPT, is making its official debut in the humanoid robotics arena. CEO Sam Altman confirmed on Sunday that the company is in the process of developing a humanoid robot, with a working demonstration anticipated as early as 2027.

In a discussion on the Sources podcast and a separate interview with Fortune, Altman justified the human-like form factor as being practical. “The world is very much designed for people,” he explained, pointing out that everyday items like doors, keyboards, and tools are all designed with the human body in mind. Therefore, robots required to operate in the same environments should mimic that form.

However, Altman was quick to emphasize that creating the physical body of the robot is the simpler part of the challenge. The more difficult task, he stated, is constructing the AI “brain” — the intelligence that enables a robot to perceive its environment, interpret instructions, plan actions, and control its movements. OpenAI’s careers page currently displays 27 open robotics positions in areas such as motion control, actuator design, and ML infrastructure, indicating that the project is already in full swing.

Despite the buzz, Altman cautioned against high expectations: “I don’t think there will be robots walking the streets for a few years longer,” he said, referring to the period after the 2027 demo. OpenAI has not yet disclosed what the demonstration will entail or the robot’s specifications. This new venture places the company in direct competition with Tesla, Figure AI, and a host of Chinese humanoid manufacturers.
