Anthropic Dedicates 5% of Equity to Public Benefit Fund Preceding IPO
Anthropic, an artificial intelligence firm and creator of the Claude AI assistant, has pledged 5% of its total equity to the newly formed Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. This initiative aims to mitigate the societal impacts of AI, such as potential job market disruption, just weeks ahead of its expected IPO.
The fund, unveiled on October 18, 2026, will operate as a wholly owned limited liability company (LLC). The commitment notably features a built-in escalator: the board can add an extra 2% of shares for every 50% increase in the company’s valuation above a confidential baseline. The fund’s equity is expressly prohibited from being utilized for lobbying or political contributions domestically or internationally.
As Anthropic gears up for what could potentially be one of the largest tech IPOs ever, the company recently posted a third-quarter revenue of $16.8 billion. Some analysts predict that its IPO valuation could surpass $1 trillion. Formal IPO marketing is slated to commence as early as the week of November 9, aiming for a listing before U.S. Thanksgiving.
In conjunction with the co-founders’ separate pledge to donate 80% of their personal holdings and an employee donation-matching scheme, approximately 20% of Anthropic’s total equity is now allocated for public benefit purposes. This level of corporate philanthropy is seldom seen at the pre-IPO stage.
