Brent Crude Maintains Position Near $110 Amidst Middle East Conflict and Supply Concerns

Global oil markets are on high alert this Monday, October 19. Brent crude is maintaining a position close to $110 per barrel — a level unseen since May. Concurrently, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) is hovering near $101 per barrel. European natural gas prices have also seen a jump of as much as 2%, exacerbating inflationary concerns for businesses globally.

The surge in price is a result of a significant escalation of conflict across the Middle East. A Saudi helicopter crashed near the Yemeni border, Houthi rebels targeted Yanbu — a key Saudi oil export hub, and UK maritime operations reported that two tankers were hit in the Persian Gulf. In the meantime, Ukraine pledged to continue striking Russian oil refineries, further constricting global supply outlooks.

Goldman Sachs estimates that the current Brent price includes a nearly $25-per-barrel geopolitical risk premium. Physical spot prices remain high due to near-record-low global inventories and ongoing threats to Gulf shipping infrastructure. Oil has now surged more than 70% since the start of 2026, prompting central banks to contemplate new interest rate hikes to combat resurgent inflation. The energy shock is adding significant pressure to the broader selloff in tech and AI stocks, which are also grappling with higher borrowing costs in this volatile macroeconomic environment.
