Waymo Secures Record-Breaking $16B Funding to Boost Global Expansion

Alphabet’s autonomous driving subsidiary, Waymo, has successfully completed one of the largest venture funding rounds in tech history. The company raised an impressive $16 billion, catapulting its valuation to a staggering $110 billion. This is a significant leap from its previous valuation of $45 billion set merely two years ago. The funding round, which concluded in February 2026, was spearheaded by parent company Alphabet, contributing approximately $13 billion to the total.

The round saw participation from new investors, including renowned venture capital firms Sequoia Capital, DST Global, and Dragoneer Investment Group. Existing backers such as Andreessen Horowitz and Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund-linked Mubadala Capital also joined in. The capital infusion sets the stage for Waymo to expedite its robotaxi fleet expansion and technology development.

Waymo, the undisputed leader in the U.S. autonomous vehicle market, has already completed over 20 million driverless trips as of early 2026. The company offers fully driverless commercial services in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin. It also has future expansion plans for cities like Miami, London, and Tokyo. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has expressed that Waymo is anticipated to make a “meaningful” contribution to Alphabet’s financials by 2027.

The funding will be utilized to scale Waymo’s fleet, penetrate new markets, and further refine its next-generation autonomous driving technology. This will solidify its lead over competitors, such as Tesla’s robotaxi program.
