The 2026 FIFA World Cup Sparks Unprecedented Tourism Growth in North America

The 2026 FIFA World Cup — set to be the largest football tournament in history — is triggering a record-breaking tourism surge across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, reshaping travel patterns across the continent. Spanning from June 11 to July 19, 2026, this expanded 48-team, 104-match event across 16 host cities is predicted to generate an estimated $9.1 billion in GDP for the three host nations during the tournament period.

As per the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), Canada is expected to witness the most significant tourism growth, with a 6.4% increase in sector GDP. Meanwhile, Mexico’s tourism sector is projected to expand by 2.4%, and the U.S. by 2.1%. According to Tourism Economics, about 1.24 million international travelers will arrive in the U.S. alone, contributing approximately $17.2 billion to the broader $40.9 billion global economic impact.

Hotel rates in the 11 U.S. host cities — including New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Miami — are running 40–80% above seasonal norms during peak match windows. Major airlines are deploying wide-body aircraft on long-haul international routes to host cities, with air travel demand surging in response to millions of fans arriving from countries such as the UK, Japan, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and more.

“It is a unique opportunity for North America to accelerate tourism growth, strengthen connectivity and showcase the region to millions of travelers around the world,” said Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of the WTTC.
