United Airlines Announces Historic International Expansion for 2027
In a historic move, United Airlines has announced the largest international network expansion in its history. On August 25, 2026, the airline revealed plans to add 10 new international cities and 13 new routes across Europe and Asia, commencing as early as March 2027. This exciting announcement was made at a live event at Newark Liberty International Airport, where United also unveiled its brand-new Airbus A321XLR, aptly named the ‘Born to Explore’ aircraft.
The new destinations are a mix of the exotic and the iconic. They include:
- Okinawa, Japan – making United the only U.S. carrier with nonstop continental U.S. service there
- Ljubljana, Slovenia
- Luxembourg City
- Ibiza and Valencia, Spain
- Marseille and Toulouse, France
- Terceira, Portugal
- Olbia and Catania, Italy
Out of these 10 new destinations, eight currently have no nonstop service from any other U.S. airline. United’s Newark hub is set to be the biggest beneficiary, gaining eight of the new European routes for summer 2027.
The new Airbus A321XLR will operate several routes including Newark to Luxembourg, Ibiza, Valencia, and Marseille, as well as Washington Dulles to Toulouse. The aircraft boasts a new United Polaris suite with a closing privacy door, complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members, and a new Economy snack bar. United CEO Scott Kirby attributed the airline’s international strategy for building a unique global network. He highlighted that United will serve 53 Atlantic and 34 Pacific destinations in 2027 — more than any airline in the world across both oceans.
