ITA Airways Introduces Groundbreaking Rome-Houston Direct Route
ITA Airways marked a historic milestone in transatlantic connectivity between Italy and Texas with the inauguration of its first-ever nonstop flight between Rome Fiumicino Airport and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport on May 1, 2026.
The new route operates three times weekly on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays with the airline’s Airbus A330-900neo aircraft. Starting June 1, 2026, the service will expand to five weekly flights, adding Mondays and Saturdays to the schedule through October 24, 2026.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire called the launch “a special, special announcement,” noting that “the first ever route between Houston and Rome will strengthen our business, diplomatic and cultural ties with Italy.” The service arrives at an opportune time, as Houston prepares to host matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With this addition, Houston becomes ITA Airways’ ninth North American destination, joining New York, Boston, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Chicago, and Toronto. The route is particularly significant as it comes during ITA’s integration into the Lufthansa Group and its transition to Star Alliance membership in 2026.
U.S. Ambassador to Italy Tilman J. Fertitta, who helped facilitate the deal, stated: “This connection strengthens the economic links that drive mutual understanding and shared prosperity between Houston and Rome.”
The A330-900neo features ITA’s signature “Made in Italy” design, offering passengers Italian culture, style, and hospitality from the moment they board. The inaugural flight received a water cannon salute upon arrival in Houston, with ceremonies held in both cities featuring Italian delicacies and local dignitaries.
