Alaska Airlines Breaks New Ground with Launch of European Routes

In a historic move, Alaska Airlines is launching its first-ever transatlantic service, with ticket sales now open for nonstop flights from Seattle to Rome beginning April 28, 2026. The announcement, confirmed within the past day, marks a significant milestone for the Seattle-based carrier’s expansion into the European market.

The new route will operate daily seasonal service using state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, featuring 34 business-class suites with lie-flat seats and sliding privacy doors in a 1-2-1 configuration. Introductory fares start at just $599 roundtrip for economy class.

“Serving Rome nonstop from Seattle is a dream come true,” said Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci. “As an Italian American whose parents emigrated from Italy, this is a particularly meaningful addition to our network. Our guests have been asking for an easy way to get to Italy for years, and we’re thrilled to provide it.”

The Rome route is part of Alaska’s broader European expansion, which also includes upcoming service to:

  • London Heathrow (year-round from May 21, 2026)
  • Reykjavik, Iceland (seasonal from May 28, 2026)

The expansion was made possible by Alaska’s 2024 acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines, which brought widebody aircraft capability to the carrier’s fleet.

By 2030, Alaska Airlines plans to serve at least 12 intercontinental destinations from Seattle, positioning the Pacific Northwest as a major gateway to Europe and Asia. The airline currently operates five 787-9 aircraft, with more deliveries scheduled.
