Kroger Appoints Former Walmart Executive Greg Foran as CEO

America’s largest standalone supermarket chain, Kroger, announced on Monday the appointment of former Walmart executive Greg Foran as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. In addition to his new role, Foran will also join Kroger’s Board of Directors.

Foran brings with him over 40 years of retail experience. He previously led Walmart’s U.S. division for six years, from 2014 to 2019, where he spearheaded the company’s digital transformation. This included the introduction of online ordering and pickup capabilities. The unit reported 20 consecutive quarters of comparable sales growth under his leadership. Most recently, he served as CEO of Air New Zealand from 2020 to October 2025.

Following the announcement, Kroger shares jumped approximately 6%, as investors welcomed the leadership change. Foran succeeds Ron Sargent, who had served as interim CEO since March 2025. This followed the abrupt resignation of former CEO Rodney McMullen due to an ethics policy violation.

“Greg is a highly respected operator who knows how to run large-scale retail businesses, strengthen store execution, and lead high-performing teams,” said Sargent. The appointment comes as Kroger faces intense competition from Walmart and navigates challenges including cost-conscious shoppers and the need for continued digital innovation.
