John Ternus Ushers in a New Era at Apple as CEO

In a landmark transition of leadership in Silicon Valley, John Ternus officially assumes the position of Apple’s Chief Executive Officer today, September 1, 2026. This change comes as Apple intensifies its efforts to close the gap with competitors in the field of artificial intelligence.

At 51, Ternus has been with Apple since 2001 and ascended to the position of Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2021. He has led the teams behind the iPhone, iPad, and Mac product lines. His predecessor, Tim Cook, who steered Apple for 15 years, will now serve as Executive Chairman, maintaining Apple’s crucial relationships with the U.S. government and China.

Under Ternus’ leadership, Apple is set to host its first major product event on September 9 in Cupertino, California. The company is anticipated to reveal its first-ever foldable iPhone and a next-generation smart display that can identify speakers and customize content accordingly. A revamped Siri, powered by Google’s Gemini AI technology, is also expected to be unveiled.

Analysts highlight the dual challenge Ternus faces: propelling Apple’s AI aspirations while managing the company’s significant reliance on Chinese manufacturing in the face of persistent political pressure from the White House. Tim Cook has agreed to manage these geopolitical relationships, allowing Ternus to concentrate on product and engineering strategy.
