“Ferritin Face” Goes Viral: TikTok’s Iron-Deficiency Beauty Trend
A striking new beauty trend called “ferritin face” is taking over TikTok and Instagram, racking up more than 16 million views. UK Google searches for the term have reportedly surged by 5,000 percent since October 2026.
The trend links several common aesthetic concerns to low ferritin, the protein that stores iron in the body:
- Dark under-eye circles
- Dull-looking skin
- Hair shedding
- Brittle nails
Countless creators have shared before-and-after photos, attributing their tired, washed-out appearance to iron deficiency. Their posts have sparked a wider conversation about whether beauty really does start from within.
The trend also reflects a growing consumer shift away from topical skincare solutions and toward nutrition, hormones, and internal health. Beauty companies are already responding with diagnostic tools and personalised supplement offerings.
However, doctors are urging caution. “Ferritin face is not a medical diagnosis,” warns Dr. Aziza Sesay, a UK-based general practitioner. Appearance alone cannot reliably indicate iron levels, and medical professionals emphasize that only a blood test can confirm low ferritin. Levels below 30 micrograms per litre are typically considered deficient.
Iron deficiency can cause pallor and skin changes associated with fatigue, but many of the trend’s more specific cosmetic claims have not been clinically validated. Consumers should consult a healthcare professional before self-diagnosing or taking iron supplements.
