Microsoft Beats Earnings Forecasts as Azure Surges 48%
In a powerful sign that Big Tech’s massive AI investments are beginning to pay off, Microsoft delivered a landmark earnings report this week, sending its shares up nearly 4% in after-hours trading.
The Redmond-based technology giant reported fiscal first-quarter revenue of $92.3 billion, beating analyst expectations of $90.6 billion. Profit topped $36.6 billion, also exceeding Wall Street’s forecast of $35.1 billion.
Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, was the standout performer, with revenue surging 48% year over year to approximately $33.17 billion. That topped the 44%–45% growth range the company had projected. Total Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $63.9 billion, up 30% year over year, while commercial contracted revenue obligations rose 73% to a record $677 billion, signaling substantial future demand.
“We delivered a strong start to the fiscal year with Microsoft Cloud revenue of $63.9 billion, with growth accelerating to 30% year-over-year,” said CFO Amy Hood.
The results come amid ongoing scrutiny of AI spending across Big Tech. Microsoft’s numbers offered a convincing counterargument, showing how its cloud and AI strategy is translating into financial returns.
