2026 FIFA World Cup Ignites Tourism Boom, Pushes NYC Hotel Occupancy Over 90%

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, spanning from June 11 to July 19 across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has sparked an unprecedented tourism surge. New York City is at the forefront of this boom, with hotels reporting occupancy levels soaring over 90 percent on key match days. What initially seemed like a potential underperformer has swiftly morphed into one of the most influential sporting events in U.S. tourism history.

As per the most recent hospitality data, hotel occupancy in New York rocketed to 90.5% during the June 16 France vs. Senegal match at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Concurrently, the average daily room rate surged to $458.64 — a substantial 38% increase compared to the same period the previous year. A report from FCM Consulting reveals that 13 out of the 16 host cities have witnessed year-over-year hotel rate hikes of at least 80% per night, with Boston leading American markets at an average of $611 per night.

Bank of America analysts predict that the tournament could add approximately $45 billion to the global GDP. The United States alone is anticipated to rake in around $19 billion through tourism, hospitality, transportation, and retail spending. An estimated 1.24 million international visitors are projected to travel to the U.S. for the tournament, spending 1.7 times more than the average international visitor. FIFA has confirmed that over 5 million tickets have already been sold across all match venues.
