Record-Breaking Heatwave Disrupts Travel in Europe
Travelers venturing to France and Western Europe this week are facing significant disruptions due to a historic, record-breaking heatwave. As of today, June 23, 2026, Paris and the entire Île-de-France region are under a red heatwave alert issued by Météo-France. This is the highest possible warning level, with temperatures predicted to reach or even exceed 41°C (105.8°F). The national weather service anticipates further record-breaking temperatures, potentially surpassing all previous records, regardless of the season.
Météo-France has issued a red heat alert for 54 departments, affecting tens of millions of residents and tourists. The heatwave has had widespread impacts, including on schools, trains, and sporting events. The French government has already closed 845 schools and colleges and cancelled numerous train services. Tragically, there have been 20 reported drowning deaths since the weekend, and at least 11 confirmed heat-related fatalities across France.
This heatwave, the second to hit Western Europe in less than a month, is also causing disruptions in Spain, Germany, Italy, and the UK. Travel experts strongly advise tourists to stay hydrated, seek air-conditioned spaces, and allow extra time for all journeys. The extreme heat is expected to persist at least through Thursday, June 25.
