U.S. Sanctions $150M Bell 505 Helicopter Sale to Boost Philippines’ Training Capabilities
The United States Department of State has given the green light to a substantial Foreign Military Sale of Bell 505 Jet Ranger X training helicopters to the Philippines. This deal, valued at approximately $150 million, is set to bolster the nation’s rotary-wing pilot training capabilities.
Announced on May 5, 2026, the package comprises up to 22 Bell 505 helicopters, complete with comprehensive training and support systems. The deal includes Bell 505 Veris flight simulators, pilot training for 22 personnel, maintenance training for six students, and a five-year integrated logistics support package. This package is designed to sustain operations at two military bases.
The Bell 505 is a five-seat light helicopter, powered by a Safran Arrius 2R turboshaft engine with dual-channel FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control). It features the Garmin G1000H NXi integrated avionics suite. The aircraft boasts a 125-knot maximum cruise speed and 306-nautical-mile range, making it an ideal choice for training operations.
According to the State Department, this sale will assist the Philippine Air Force in addressing aircraft competency gaps. It will facilitate the transition of pilots to more complex rotary aircraft, including the service’s S-70i Black Hawk and T129 ATAK combat helicopters. The deal supports broader Philippine military modernization efforts amid rising regional security demands in the Indo-Pacific. Bell Textron Inc. of Fort Worth, Texas, will serve as the principal contractor.
