Airbnb Broadens Hotel Listings Amidst Rising Platform Rivalry

Airbnb is undergoing a significant strategic shift, substantially broadening its hotel offerings on the platform. This move blurs the boundaries between traditional hospitality and alternative accommodations. The home-sharing giant is actively incorporating hotels and professionally managed properties in key urban markets such as New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and Madrid.

The expansion arises as Airbnb confronts escalating competition in the hospitality sector and regulatory pressures on short-term rentals in numerous cities. Jesse Stein, who assumed the role of Airbnb’s first head of hotels in January 2026, shared with the Financial Times that the company is offering a very competitive commission structure compared to traditional online travel agencies like Expedia and Booking.com.

As per Airbnb CFO Ellie Mertz, hotel bookings are growing at nearly double the rate of the platform’s overall average. However, they still account for a single-digit percentage of total nights booked. The company’s goal is to conclude 2026 with hotels constituting a significantly larger percent of the overall business. Industry analysts propose that this maneuver is transforming Airbnb from a pure short-term rental platform into a comprehensive travel marketplace. This shift compels hotels to reevaluate their distribution strategies as booking platforms become more crucial than property types in determining future hospitality competition.
