Unveiling the World’s First Fully Electric Cruise Ship: A Revolutionary Step in Decarbonizing the Cruise Industry

At the Seatrade Cruise Global event in Miami this week, German shipbuilder Meyer Werft revealed an ambitious plan for the world’s first fully battery-electric cruise ship. This groundbreaking initiative marks a significant stride towards decarbonizing the cruise industry.

The concept vessel, named ‘Project Vision‘, is designed to accommodate up to 1,856 passengers. The ship, measuring approximately 82,000 gross tons and 275 meters in length, promises to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional cruise ships. This is made possible by a battery system supplied by Norway’s Corvus Energy.

“We considered how we could reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to decarbonization through innovation. And not just in 50 years,” said Tim Krug of the Meyer Werft Concept Development Group. The technology could become reality sooner than expected—if orders are placed this year, the first ship could be delivered as early as 2031.

The battery-electric design enables innovative architectural features, including the elimination of traditional exhaust systems and funnels. This creates unobstructed sun deck views and reduces noise and vibration for passengers. The ship is specifically designed for European cruise routes, with charging infrastructure expected at around 100 European ports by 2030. For longer voyages like transatlantic crossings, hybrid configurations with small generators would be available.
