FAA Engages Gamers in Dynamic Air Traffic Controller Recruitment Drive
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) launched a groundbreaking recruitment campaign on April 10, 2026. This initiative targets video game enthusiasts to fill vital air traffic controller roles. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy revealed that the annual hiring window would commence at midnight on April 17, 2026.
Emphasizing the skills that gamers inherently possess, the campaign highlights quick decision-making, sustained concentration, and the ability to manage complex situations under pressure. “This campaign’s innovative communication style and focus on gaming taps into a growing demographic of young adults who have many of the hard skills it takes to be a successful controller,” stated Secretary Duffy.
Currently, the FAA employs approximately 11,000 air traffic controllers, with an additional 4,000 trainees in the pipeline. However, to be fully staffed, the agency requires thousands more. The FAA has already achieved nearly 50 percent of its Fiscal Year 2026 hiring goal, with almost 1,200 new controllers onboarded to date. The hiring campaign will conclude once the FAA receives 8,000 applications.
Controllers can anticipate earning more than $155,000 three years post-Academy graduation. This salary is complemented by paid training and comprehensive benefits.
