Anthropic Unveils Claude Opus 5: Cutting-Edge AI at Half the Cost

Artificial intelligence pioneer, Anthropic, has launched its latest top-tier model, Claude Opus 5, on July 24, 2026. This release brings near-frontier AI performance to developers and enterprises at a significantly reduced cost compared to its premium models.

Anthropic characterizes Opus 5 as “a thoughtful and proactive model that closely matches the frontier intelligence of Claude Fable 5 at half the price.” Importantly, the API pricing remains the same as the previous Opus 4.8 model, making it a direct performance upgrade with no additional cost for existing users.

In benchmark evaluations, Claude Opus 5 achieved a score of 43.3% on FrontierBench v0.1, surpassing OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol (37.5%), and hit 30.2% on ARC-AGI-3. The model also led the pack on GDPval-AA for coding and knowledge tasks. Anthropic highlights that Opus 5 generates approximately 26% fewer tokens on average compared to Opus 4.8 at maximum reasoning, enhancing both speed and cost-efficiency.

Opus 5 is now the default model on Claude Max and the most powerful option available on Claude Pro. Users can adjust an “effort” setting to balance processing depth against token usage, a feature that makes it suitable for everyday use as well as demanding long-horizon tasks like software development, scientific research, and corporate workflows.

The release emphasizes Anthropic’s strategy of democratizing access to high-capability AI, positioning Opus 5 as the preferred model for developers seeking powerful performance without the expense of a top-tier flagship.
