FAA Enforces Emergency Directive for Certain Bell 505 Helicopters Due to Safety Concerns
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued Emergency Airworthiness Directive 2026-05-51 for specific Bell 505 helicopters. This directive, effective from April 16, 2026, addresses a critical safety issue that could potentially result in a total loss of control. The directive specifically applies to Bell Model 505 helicopters with serial numbers 65011 and subsequent, equipped with certain ballast box assemblies.
The emergency order was initiated due to the detection of a hinge assembly failure on the aft movable ballast box assembly. This failure could potentially allow ballast weights to escape and strike the tail rotor assembly during flight. Consequently, the directive necessitates an immediate revision of the Rotorcraft Flight Manual to prohibit the use of ballast weights within the aft movable ballast box assembly.
It’s worth noting that Transport Canada had issued its own emergency directive on March 3, 2026. This was after the discovery of plastic deformation and improper pin engagement in the door hinge knuckles. The FAA’s emergency AD was dispatched directly to all known U.S. owners and operators of the affected helicopters on March 6, 2026. The directive becomes fully effective this month for operators who did not receive direct notification.
