Tata Communications, the Tata Group’s global telecom and digital infrastructure arm, announced a landmark investment of up to $450 million to construct an AI-ready, long-haul fibre network spanning approximately 10,000 kilometres across India — one of the country’s largest connectivity projects ever dedicated to artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The network is designed as a high-speed, low-latency “AI superhighway” to connect India’s rapidly growing data-centre corridors with cloud service providers, global capability centres (GCCs), banks, and enterprise customers. The planned infrastructure will offer a capacity of 7.2 petabytes, built to handle the performance demands of next-generation AI and machine learning workloads.
The rollout will occur in three phases. The first phase focuses on the critical Mumbai–Pune–Hyderabad–Chennai corridor, a key route for India’s hyperscale and AI growth. Subsequent phases will extend east and west to cities including Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar, and GIFT City, eventually linking into Tata Communications’ global network backbone and international undersea cable landing stations. The investment, to be deployed over three to five years, positions India as a strategic hub for global AI infrastructure at a time when demand for reliable, high-capacity data connectivity is surging worldwide.
