Unveiling the Mall Skincare Scam: Consumers Charged Up to $50,000

A shocking investigative report, published by NPR between October 14 and 16, 2026, has brought to light a nationwide skincare fraud scheme. This scheme, operating within American shopping malls, has left hundreds of consumers—many of whom are elderly or disabled—facing bills of up to $50,000 for products they never authorized.

The year-long investigation, led by reporters Monika Evstatieva and Caley Fox Shannon, revealed a network of mall skincare stores. Many of these stores are linked to the California-based Mazal Group. They used free sample offers and high-pressure sales tactics to systematically target vulnerable shoppers across the United States. In one shocking instance in Michigan, an elderly man with dementia was charged $42,000 for skincare products and devices he did not knowingly purchase.

The investigation drew from state and federal court lawsuits, hundreds of online reviews, and nearly 500 consumer complaints obtained via Freedom of Information Act requests. Federal agencies are reported to have investigated individual operators for employing workers on tourist visas, resulting in more than a dozen guilty pleas for visa fraud and money-laundering. NPR staff visited stores in Virginia, Maryland, and California, as well as Mazal Group’s Chatsworth, California headquarters.

Consumer advocates are urging shoppers to be vigilant when approached by mall skincare kiosks. They are also calling on regulators to take sustained, coordinated action to shut down these predatory operations nationwide.
