Swift Fuels’ 100R Unleaded Avgas Receives Approval for Over 1,600 Aircraft Models
The transition away from leaded aviation gasoline has taken a significant leap forward. Swift Fuels announced a landmark expansion of its FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC), which now includes its 100R unleaded avgas. This fuel is now approved for use in over 1,200 piston engine models and 1,600 airframe models. These aircraft account for approximately 56% of all 100LL avgas consumed in the United States.
The FAA’s Central Certification Branch orchestrated the approvals, which cover engines and airframes from dozens of manufacturers. Engine approvals include:
- Lycoming (~395 models)
- Continental (~195 models)
- Curtiss Wright (~95 models)
- Pratt & Whitney (~95 models)
These approvals extend to more than 80 OEMs. Airframe approvals include approximately:
- 118 Cessna models
- 101 Beechcraft models
- 98 Piper models
Additional approvals extend to aircraft from Mooney, Grumman, WACO, Fairchild, Stinson, and others. Swift Fuels’ 100R is currently the only commercially available 100-octane unleaded avgas that operates under FAA-approved STCs and complies with the ASTM International D8603 production specification.
This Phase I expansion sets the stage for further Phase II and Phase III approvals covering higher-performance engines. These are expected to be granted between 2026 and 2028. This is part of the U.S. government’s mandate to complete the transition to unleaded aviation gasoline by the end of 2030. Pilots must obtain a Swift Fuels STC before using 100R in eligible aircraft.
