Elon Musk Invests $1 Billion in Debt-Laden Media Powerhouse Skydance
In a significant upheaval in the media industry, Elon Musk has invested an estimated $1 billion in Skydance. This newly established Hollywood titan controls Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., HBO, CBS, CNN, Nickelodeon, and MTV. The deal, initially reported by Semafor and later confirmed by CNBC on October 22, 2026, offers a crucial equity boost to a company burdened with nearly $80–90 billion in debt after its $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, which concluded on October 6.
Skydance, jointly led by David Ellison and former Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz, is charged with the amalgamation of two of Hollywood’s most significant studios and two major streaming platforms, Paramount+ and HBO Max. The goal is to achieve $6 billion in cost savings over three years. Musk’s investment coincided with new equity contributions from other Skydance supporters, including board member Laurene Powell Jobs.
This development signifies Musk’s strengthening relationship with the Ellison family. Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison had previously invested $1 billion in Musk’s 2022 Twitter acquisition and also supported Tesla. Media tycoon John Malone had forecasted an even larger Musk investment of up to $10 billion, but the confirmed figure today stands at $1 billion. It remains unclear whether the investment was made personally or through one of Musk’s companies.
