Unleaded Revolution: Swift 100R Avgas Receives Approval for 1,600 Aircraft Models
In a monumental move towards eradicating leaded fuel from general aviation, the FAA has significantly broadened the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for Swift Fuels’ 100R unleaded aviation gasoline. This expansion includes an addition of over 1,200 piston engine models and 1,600 airframe models to its Approved Model List (AML). This announcement signifies Phase I of Swift Fuels’ comprehensive unleaded avgas transition plan.
The recently approved aircraft account for approximately 56% of the current U.S. 100LL (leaded avgas) consumption. The approved airframes cover a wide array of popular manufacturers such as Textron/Cessna (~118 models), Piper (98 models), Textron/Beechcraft (~101 models), Mooney, Grumman, WACO, Fairchild, and Stinson. On the engine front, Lycoming (~395 models) and Continental (~195 models) top the list, with representation from more than 80 piston engine OEMs.
Swift Fuels highlights that 100R is presently the sole commercially available 100-octane unleaded avgas that aligns with ASTM International’s D8603 production specification. The company is aiming for Phase II and Phase III approvals, which cover higher-performance engines, through 2026, 2027, and early 2028. The ultimate goal is to achieve full fleet approval by 2030.
