FAA Achieves Significant Progress: 100th Surface Safety System Rolled Out
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has achieved a significant milestone in its air traffic control modernization efforts, with the deployment of its 100th Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI) system at U.S. airports. This announcement was made by Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy, who highlighted the fact that the FAA has doubled the pace of SAI installations in recent months.
The SAI technology leverages Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) data, providing air traffic controllers with a real-time view of aircraft and vehicles on airport surfaces. This remains effective even in adverse weather conditions or when aircraft are outside the direct line of sight of the control tower. The primary aim of the system is to minimize dangerous runway incursions and enhance overall surface safety.
By the end of 2026, the FAA aims to install the SAI system at 44 additional airports, with a long-term goal of reaching a total of 220 airports by 2028. Recent recipients of the system include Ann Arbor Municipal, Billings-Logan International, Gulfport-Biloxi International, and Corpus Christi International. When integrated with existing surface surveillance equipment at the nation’s busiest hubs, this rollout is projected to extend surface surveillance capabilities to every airport with an FAA-operated control tower.
