Record-Breaking Tourism Surge Across North America Fueled by FIFA World Cup 2026

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, now in full swing across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is generating one of the largest international tourism movements in modern history. However, the travel boom is proving uneven across host cities.

With 104 matches played across 16 host cities and the tournament running from June 11 through July 19, 2026, the event is drawing an unprecedented wave of international fans. According to Tourism Economics, 1.24 million international travelers are projected to arrive in the U.S. alone, contributing roughly $17.2 billion of a projected $40.9 billion global economic impact.

Cities like Dallas, Miami, Houston, Atlanta, and Los Angeles are seeing hotel occupancy spikes, with some surpassing 1,400% above normal levels. Airbnb reported an 80% surge in searches across host cities compared to the same period last year, with the biggest booking increases in Philadelphia and Miami. More than 100,000 new homes have been listed in World Cup cities since October 2025.

Marriott CEO Tony Capuano expressed his enthusiasm about the impact of FIFA as booking patterns strengthen heading into summer. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) forecasts direct Travel & Tourism GDP growth of 6.4% in Canada, 2.4% in Mexico, and 2.1% in the United States as a result of the tournament.

Flight booking data from travel intelligence firm Sojern shows a roughly 13% jump in Houston and 10% in Dallas-Fort Worth year over year. As the tournament enters the knockout rounds, experts expect demand to become more concentrated and intense in the remaining host cities, culminating in the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19.
