Unprecedented Tourism Boost in North America Sparked by FIFA World Cup 2026
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is currently underway across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, triggering an unprecedented surge in tourism. This extraordinary event, the largest in football history, features 48 teams competing in 104 matches across 16 host cities. According to Allianz Trade economic analysts, the tournament is projected to contribute an estimated $9 billion in GDP to North America’s economy during June and July.
Data from the short-term rental analytics firm, AirDNA, indicates that Kansas City is leading the booking surges with a 49% year-over-year increase. Dallas-Fort Worth and Miami follow closely with a 45% and 40% increase respectively. Tourism Economics forecasts that 1.24 million international visitors will arrive in the US for the tournament, contributing approximately $17.2 billion to the global World Cup economic impact of $40.9 billion. Fans from Germany, Brazil, the UK, France, Spain, and Argentina are creating substantial cross-border travel flows.
Airbnb anticipates this to be its most successful event, even surpassing the 2024 Paris Olympics. Sojern travel data reveals that over three-quarters of World Cup travelers plan to spend between six to twelve nights at their destination. Marriott CEO, Tony Capuano, expressed his optimism to CNBC, stating, “We’re pretty enthusiastic about the impact of FIFA as we look at booking patterns coming into the summer.” The grand finale is scheduled for MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19.
