Unique Homebuilt TwinJet Finds New Purpose at Colorado Aviation College
A unique homebuilt jet aircraft has found a new purpose in an aviation classroom, providing students with an exceptional hands-on training opportunity. Aims Community College in Loveland, Colorado, is now the proud recipient of a Maverick TwinJet 1500 — one of only four aircraft of its type ever flown — for use in its Aircraft Maintenance Training (A&P) program.
The jet was generously donated by Mike Seavall, a Longmont, Colorado resident and private pilot. Seavall painstakingly built the all-composite aircraft himself from a kit, a process that spanned two years. He personally flew the jet to Northern Colorado Regional Airport (KFNL), before taxiing it directly to the Aims Aircraft Maintenance Center (AMTC). Students and faculty gathered to witness the jet’s arrival, marking an exciting new chapter for the college.
The Maverick TwinJet 1500 is equipped with twin T58 jet engines, each capable of producing 750 lbs of thrust. It can reach an impressive 31,000 feet at a ground speed of just under 385 mph. The jet’s advanced composite construction and modern avionics package will provide A&P students with exposure to cutting-edge technologies, a rare opportunity at the community college level. “It puts us leaps and bounds ahead of many of the A&P schools in the country,” said Aircraft Maintenance Chief Michael Sasso. Seavall, meanwhile, retains “visitation rights” to see the aircraft continue its legacy.
