Global Whey Protein Shortage & Record Prices: The Ozempic Effect
A growing global health crisis is hitting gym bags and supplement shelves: whey protein is in critically short supply worldwide. Industry experts are pointing directly at the explosive rise of GLP-1 weight-loss medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro as a key driver.
According to USDA market data, whey protein concentrate prices have surged past $11 per pound and whey protein isolate is sitting at $12 per pound — levels never seen before. Some suppliers are reportedly sold out for the remainder of 2026, with prices rising more than 50% since January. BellRing Brands, owner of Premier Protein and Dymatize, confirmed on an earnings call that whey has reached “historic highs.”
The shortage is being driven by a perfect storm:
- Roughly 12% of the U.S. population is now using GLP-1 drugs, and healthcare providers routinely advise these patients to increase protein intake to preserve lean muscle mass during rapid weight loss.
- Meanwhile, 70% of Americans say they are trying to consume more protein overall, up from 59% four years ago.
- Major dairy firms are investing billions in new capacity — Ireland’s Tirlán committed €126 million, while Idaho Milk Products injected $200 million into new facilities — but analysts don’t expect meaningful supply relief until late 2026 or 2027.
In the meantime, plant-based alternatives like pea and soy protein are gaining ground.
