Barclays Exceeds Expectations with £8.3bn Q2 Revenue

Barclays PLC (NYSE: BCS) reported a remarkable performance for the second quarter of 2026 on Tuesday, July 28. The group’s income reached £8.3 billion, marking a 16% increase year-on-year. Additionally, the profit before tax saw a surge of over 30% to £3.3 billion. All three of Barclays’ UK business divisions posted a return on tangible equity (RoTE) above 20%, with the overall RoTE reaching 16.1% in Q2.

Following the robust results, Barclays has revised its full-year 2026 income target to approximately £31.5 billion, an increase of £500 million from the previous guidance. The bank also announced a £1 billion share buyback and an £800 million interim dividend. This brings the total H1 2026 distributions to £2.3 billion, reflecting a 61% jump year-on-year. The earnings per share rose to 16.7p, up from 11.7p in the previous year.

Despite the impressive figures, Barclays’ shares fell by approximately 6–7% in trading due to missing Wall Street’s earnings-per-share consensus. Operating expenses also saw a 7% increase year-over-year, amounting to £4.5 billion. Investors continue to tread carefully due to macroeconomic challenges, such as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and heightened global uncertainty.
