Groundbreaking Research: Misplaced Fat Loss Can Induce Diabetes

A groundbreaking study published in the esteemed Journal of Clinical Investigation is challenging traditional beliefs about body fat. The research, conducted by Michigan Medicine – University of Michigan, under the leadership of Professors Ormond MacDougald, Ph.D. and Elif Oral, M.D., reveals that losing the wrong type of fat — healthy fat tissue — can actually instigate diabetes and fatty liver disease, rather than prevent them.

The study delves into a rare condition known as familial partial lipodystrophy type 2 (FPLD2). This condition, caused by a mutation in the lamin A/C gene, leads to fat loss from specific body regions. The researchers discovered that the affected fat cells become inflamed, lose their lipid-storing capacity, and eventually disappear. This severe disruption of the body’s metabolic balance leads to, as graduate researcher Jessica Maung, Ph.D. puts it, “really catastrophic things” at a cellular level.

The findings, extensively reported between July 26–28, 2026, underscore a crucial understanding: fat tissue is not merely an energy storage but a vital organ that stores energy, produces hormones, and regulates blood sugar and metabolism.
