IATA Initiates ‘Save a Life, Not a Bag’ Flight Safety Campaign
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has rolled out a compelling global passenger safety campaign, “Save a Life, Not a Bag”. This campaign implores travelers to abandon all cabin baggage during aircraft evacuations. The announcement was made on June 8, 2026, during IATA’s 82nd Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The initiative has received support from two of the world’s leading aviation regulators — the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The campaign is a response to a perilously growing trend: passengers pausing to gather their bags — or even snap photos — during emergency evacuations. IATA warns that carrying baggage during an evacuation can impede cabin movement, obstruct aisles and exits, damage evacuation slides, and cause injury to other passengers and crew. A single passenger retrieving their luggage can cause a delay for everyone else on board.
Startling research findings highlight the urgency of the situation: only 18% of passengers are aware that aircraft evacuation procedures are based on a 90-second safety benchmark. Moreover, one in ten passengers confessed they might still grab their baggage even if instructed otherwise. IATA Director General Willie Walsh emphasized that the message is unequivocal and non-negotiable: adhere to crew instructions, leave everything behind, and promptly proceed to the nearest exit. EASA Executive Director Florian Guillermet reinforced this message, underlining that swift evacuation saves lives and every passenger has a role to play. The campaign video was crafted with contributions from human behavioral specialists to ensure maximum impact and recall.
