Helios Horizon: Pioneering the Future of Aviation with Solid-State Battery Flight

A quiet revolution in electric aviation unfolded on June 5, 2026. Helios Horizon, a Florida-based aerospace project, achieved a groundbreaking feat – the world’s first human-piloted flight of an electric aircraft powered by solid-state batteries. This historic event took place at the Zephyrhills Municipal Airport in Florida, under the guidance of founder and chief test pilot Miguel Iturmendi, a veteran of renowned aviation programs like the Perlan Project and Solar Impulse.

The aircraft, a modified Pipistrel Taurus Electro motor-glider, was outfitted with next-generation solid-state batteries. These batteries boast an impressive energy density of 410 Wh/kg, a significant leap from the 260 Wh/kg offered by its previous lithium-ion pack. According to Helios Horizon, these new batteries provide 60–80% greater energy density, can charge from nearly empty to 80% in under 15 minutes, and offer enhanced safety features, including superior resistance to thermal runaway and overheating.

“For the first time, we have a battery technology that yields the range and charging times necessary to make commercial electric aviation viable,” declared Iturmendi. The initial flights were primarily aimed at validating weight and balance with the new batteries installed. Having achieved this milestone, the team is now gearing up for stratospheric flights above 40,000 feet, slated for autumn 2026. Helios Horizon currently holds the world altitude record for an electric aircraft in its weight class.
