Dow Surges 1,569 Points as Democrats Sweep U.S. Midterms

Wall Street erupted in one of its biggest single-day rallies of the year on Wednesday, November 4, as Democrats delivered a historic sweep in the U.S. midterm elections. The party seized control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in a sweeping rebuke of President Donald Trump.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average soared 1,569 points, or 3%, to close at 53,356—its largest single-day gain since April 2025 and the biggest post-midterm move since 1982, according to CFRA Research data cited by CNN. The S&P 500 rose 1.58% to 7,688, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.44% to 25,736.

Analysts widely attributed the rally to easing political uncertainty, with investors warming to the prospect of divided-government gridlock—a scenario markets have historically favored. “Stocks are sharply higher today as election clarity reduces uncertainty,” said Terry Sandven, chief equity strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management.

Meanwhile, oil prices plunged more than 7%, and the VIX volatility index fell nearly 20%. Data center and chip stocks bucked the broader trend, declining on concerns about potential tighter AI regulation under a Democrat-led Congress.
