Starlink’s Revised Pricing Model Ignites Global Backlash from General Aviation Pilots

General aviation pilots worldwide are voicing strong opposition to Starlink’s restructured pricing model. The new model has made in-flight internet connectivity cost-prohibitive for most aircraft owners and operators.

In early March 2026, SpaceX imposed a 100 mph speed cap on all standard Roam and Priority plans. This move effectively blocks their use in virtually all general aviation aircraft during flight. To maintain connectivity above that speed, pilots must now subscribe to dedicated aviation tiers. These are priced at $250 per month for the Aviation 300 MPH plan or $1,000 per month for the Aviation 450 MPH plan, each with just 20 GB of data. Previously, pilots enjoyed plans with significantly more data for around $50-65 per month.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), together with the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations, representing 400,000 pilots across 80 countries, sent a formal letter to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on March 9, 2026. They requested a revised pricing framework. AOPA Senior Vice President Jim Coon stated that “Starlink has priced out the lion’s share of general aviation pilots.” He noted the service had been a safety-enhancing tool for real-time weather and flight information. A Change.org petition has gathered over 4,000 signatures from frustrated pilots who had invested in hardware expecting affordable ongoing service.
