FAA Imposes Flight Limitations at O’Hare to Mitigate Summer Travel Delays

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated a significant reduction in the daily flight schedule at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. This measure, which entails a decrease of over 300 flights, will be in effect from May to October 2026. The FAA has implemented a strict cap of 2,708 operations per day in an effort to address severe congestion and delay concerns.

The scheduling reduction was announced on April 16, 2026, and will cover the peak summer travel season. This decision follows airlines’ plans to schedule over 3,080 flights on peak days for summer 2026—a 14.9 percent increase from 2025. This is despite the fact that only 60 percent of arrivals and departures operated on time last summer.

“If you book a ticket, we want you and your family to have the certainty that you’ll fly without endless delays and cancellations,” said Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. “We successfully turned Newark Liberty International into the most on-time airport in the Tri-State Area by fixing telecoms issues at record speed and reducing overcapacity. Applying that same strategy at O’Hare will reduce delays and make this busy summer travel season a little easier.”

The decision impacts major carriers such as United Airlines and American Airlines, both of which have been vying for gate allocation at the nation’s busiest airport by flight volume. American Airlines anticipates a reduction of fewer than 40 flights per day, while United is expected to cut more than 200 daily operations.

The FAA has cited several reasons for the intervention, including ongoing construction limiting airfield capacity, constrained gate availability, and competitive scheduling dynamics between carriers. Airlines that exceed the cap risk penalties of up to $75,000 per flight. To support the reduction efforts, the agency is also deploying additional air traffic controllers and accelerating training programs.
