Revolutionary Battery-Electric Cruise Ship Set to Sail by 2031

German shipbuilder Meyer Werft has recently announced a groundbreaking initiative – the world’s first fully battery-electric cruise ship exceeding 80,000 gross tons. This innovative concept, known as “Project Vision”, was unveiled at the Seatrade Cruise Global event in Miami.

The proposed 275-meter vessel is designed to accommodate 1,856 passengers. It promises a staggering reduction of up to 95% in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional cruise ships. The advanced power system for this eco-friendly ship will be supplied by Norwegian battery specialist, Corvus Energy. The ship is expected to service typical European cruise routes, including Barcelona to Civitavecchia.

“The technology is available today. If ordered this year, we could already deliver the first ship in 2031,” Thomas Weigend, Chief Sales Officer at Meyer Werft.

The battery-electric design eliminates the need for traditional exhaust systems and funnels, freeing up deck space for unobstructed ocean views. This innovative design also paves the way for exciting features like an indoor aqua park.

By 2030, it is anticipated that approximately 100 European ports will have the necessary charging infrastructure to support such vessels. This development marks the dawn of a new era of zero-emission cruising.
