Major Milestone: FDA Approves Eli Lilly’s Innovative Weight Loss Pill, Foundayo

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given the green light to Eli Lilly’s once-daily weight loss pill, Foundayo. The approval, announced on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, signifies a significant leap forward in the burgeoning obesity treatment market. Known also as orforglipron, Foundayo is the second oral GLP-1 medication to hit the market, following the approval of Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill in December 2025.

What sets Foundayo apart from its competitors is its flexibility. Unlike the Wegovy pill, which must be taken on an empty stomach each morning, Foundayo can be taken at any time of day without any food or water restrictions. Starting from April 6, the medication will be available through Lilly’s direct-to-consumer platform, LillyDirect, with prescriptions being accepted immediately.

Clinical trials have demonstrated promising results. Patients lost an average of 12.4% of their body weight at the highest dose after 72 weeks. This is comparable to the Wegovy pill but less than injectable versions. The pricing is as follows:

  • Self-pay patients: $149 per month for the lowest dose
  • Commercial insurance patients: As low as $25 per month with a savings card
  • Medicare Part D patients: $50 per month starting from July 1, 2026, as part of the Trump administration’s deal with drugmakers

“Today, fewer than 1 in 10 people who could benefit from a GLP-1 are taking one,” said Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks. “We believe Foundayo can help level the playing field for those living with obesity or who are overweight and living with weight-related complications.”
