Goldman Sachs’ Chief Legal Officer Steps Down Amid Epstein Controversy

Kathy Ruemmler, the chief legal officer of Goldman Sachs and former White House counsel to President Barack Obama, has announced her resignation. This decision comes in the wake of revelations regarding her relationship with convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.

Effective from June 30, 2026, Ruemmler’s departure follows the release of documents by the Department of Justice. These documents revealed years of friendly email exchanges with Epstein, where she affectionately referred to him as “Uncle Jeffrey” and “older brother”. The files also disclosed that she had received lavish gifts from Epstein, such as luxury handbags and a fur coat, and had provided him with advice on reputation management.

Goldman Sachs CEO, David Solomon, accepted her resignation and acknowledged her decision to step down. He praised her as an “extraordinary general counsel”. Ruemmler, who has held the position since 2020, stated that her “responsibility is to put Goldman Sachs’ interests first”. Goldman Sachs confirmed that they were aware of her past interactions with Epstein at the time of her hiring and had supported her for months.

Ruemmler is now part of a growing list of high-profile figures whose careers have been affected by their connections to Epstein. These connections were revealed in investigative files that were recently released. The emails showed contact between Ruemmler and Epstein from 2014 to 2019, even after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for prostitution and shortly before his 2019 arrest on federal sex trafficking charges.
