Barcelona Gears Up for Gaudí Year 2026: A Monumental Celebration Boosting Tourism
As 2026 approaches, Barcelona is gearing up for an extraordinary celebration. The year marks the Gaudí Year, a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the death of legendary architect Antoni Gaudí on June 10, 1926. This year-long celebration is set to provide a significant boost to the city’s tourism sector.
The Catalan government and Spanish Ministry of Culture have officially declared 2026 as the Gaudí Year, recognized as an Event of Exceptional Public Interest. This coincides with Barcelona’s prestigious appointment as the 2026 UNESCO World Capital of Architecture, thrusting the city into the global spotlight.
One of the key highlights of the celebration will be the blessing and inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ at the Sagrada Família in June 2026. This final tower completes the basilica’s vision at a towering height of 172.5 meters, making it the tallest church globally. Throughout the year, Barcelona will offer a plethora of special exhibitions, immersive experiences, guided tours, concerts, and cultural events dedicated to Gaudí’s masterpieces.
Major landmarks including the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló, and Casa Milà (La Pedrera) will host unique programming. In addition, lesser-known works like Torre Bellesguard will also be highlighted. The 2026 Gaudí International Congress will take place in June at La Pedrera, featuring academic research and interdisciplinary studies on the architect’s work.
